Old Forest/Remnant Light
Old Forest/Remnant Light, mixed mediums, 48" x 87" x 2"
Photographs of Fernbank Forest in Atlanta, Georgia, as well as the beautiful woods of the Hambidge Center near Dillard, where I have spent several residencies, are layered here to evoke a condensed experience of both forest and natural history museum.
In this two-sided window two gridded transparent images are separated by a 1" deep cabinet, creating both an inside and outside view, a day and a night view. The central panes, or "lights" contain assemblages of natural objects and language to form a cabinet of curiosities, the Renaissance precursor of the museum as we know it. Evoked are sense memories of a deeply layered space where direction may be lost, then found; where views are revealed and concealed, as inter-leaved and interwoven as the branches of towering trees.
