Origins

Word etymologies may reveal histories and mythologies which in turn inspire visual and formal possibilities. To paraphrase Jean Arp, "art is a fountain which spouts formal fables."  Language and the visual each invoke and inform the other, creating a hybrid story.

Book

Smooth beech bark was used in the Middle Ages as a surface on which to inscribe words. Bark "banners" on spikes made announcements. Word etymologies show that the word book derives from the word for beech tree. Any walk through a public forest will reveal that a similar practice still memorializes lovers's initials and cryptic meanings.
